Annie Nayko was born on December 4, 1919 in the Ituna district of Saskatchewan. A daughter of Andrew and Mary (nee Kobialko) Kaczmar. Annie grew up on the family farm north of Ituna and attended Lunville School. The family attended Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ituna. As a young woman Annie worked in Regina for a short period with her sister Julia. Annie was united in marriage to Anton Nayko on February 11, 1945. The couple began farming and eventually took over the Nayko family farm Southwest of Ituna. Annie and Tony raised their two sons, Allan and Gerald. Annie always kept busy helping on the farm, cooking and growing her large garden with many flowers. Sewing was a pastime and Annie sewed many of her own clothes and dresses. Annie was always an active member of Sacred Heart Parish. She was a founding member of the Ituna U.C.W.L branch and remained a member for over forty years. Annie volunteered in the hall and with many church activities. In 1982 Annie and Tony moved into Ituna and continued to help on the farm at the busy times of seeding and harvesting. Annie even continued to cook from town and provide suppers in the field for the harvest crew. Even though her grandchildren were in Alberta she kept in touch with everyone and always remembered everyone's birthdays and kept up with their activities. After Tony passed away in 1991 Annie remained an active and independent woman. With her son, Allan's help, she kept up the house and yard and continued volunteering and helping where she could. Annie passed away on February 24, 2017 at the Ituna Pioneer Health Lodge. She was ninety seven years of age. She was predeceased by her parents, Andrew and Mary; her husband Tony; her brothers, Mike, Nick and John; her sister, Julia Sikorski. She leaves to cherish her memory her two sons, Allan Nayko of Ituna and Gerald (Ann) Nayko of Hythe, AB; three grandchildren and their families, Jody (Ken) Mah and their two children (Katelyn and Rhaya), Jerry (Bev) Nayko and their three children (Faith, Damon and Hannah) and Karri (Stan) Nyland and their two children (Tanner and Reis); one sister, Rosie (Bill) Uchacz of Ituna; one sister in law Emily Kapusiak in Ontario as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Prayers were held on Tuesday evening, February 28th 2017 from Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ituna with Bishop Emeritus Michael Wiwchar, C.Ss.R. officiating. The Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Wednesday morning, March 1st 2017 from Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Jeffrey Stephaniuk as Celebrant. Cantors, Ladmer Moskal and Wayne Boczulak led in the singing of the responses. The crossbearer was Reis Nyland, the epistle-reader was Faith Nayko. The interment took place in the Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery with Jody & Ken Mah, Jerry & Bev Nayko, and Karri & Stan Nyland serving as the casketbearers. Memorials were to the Ituna Pioneer Lodge or to the Sacred Heart Cemetery Fund.
