Life Story for Edward Joseph Golemba

Mr. Ed Golemba of Ituna, beloved husband of Jean Golemba passed away on January 17, 2017. He was 88 years of age. Edward (Ed) Joseph Golemba, second youngest child from a family of ten children was born June 20, 1928 near Krakow, Poland in a small village, Leki Dolne (English translation - "lower meadows"). Ed's family immigrated to Canada; arriving in Ituna on June 29, 1929. Ed celebrated his first birthday aboard ship where, supposedly, he took his first self supporting step amid high rolling north Atlantic waves, aboard the passenger ship "Assonnia". In 1930, the family settled in the St. Joseph District near Ituna, SK where they built a two room log house and several other log shelters that were urgently required to begin a homestead life on a wooded quarter of land. Ed's early life was occupied by attending school - the transportation was "footsmobile" - summer and winter. There were three fox farms in the district so Ed set up a trap line where he trapped gophers and rabbits - providing food for the foxes. He also cut down trees and hauled wood to Ituna. In 1942, Ed quit school to manage the family farm. However, on March 10, 1943, a wood sawing accident almost claimed the loss of Ed's left hand, which, although tragic, gave Ed the opportunity to return to St. Joseph School. In 1950, Ed took over the family farm. In 1951, he married Jean Winter who was teaching at Ravine School, north of Leross, SK. They were blessed with two children, Marvin and Rita Mae. He was a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather. During the 55 years that Ed farmed he served on over 40 different community service committees. He was an R.M. councillor for 38 years. During this time he was very instrumental in bringing ambulance service to Ituna and underground natural gas and power to the area. As a result of his years of community service, in 2010, he received the Lieutenant Governor's Award for outstanding service to Rural Saskatchewan. He was often called upon to be spokesperson on several occasions in the community - agricultural meetings, weddings, funerals and other special events.
Ed enjoyed music - country (Anne Murray), old time & opera, also telling jokes. Ed's hobbies were lathe & machining, creating & manufacturing iron products, fishing, playing cards "three spot and cribbage. A unique project that Ed will be remembered for is a Time Clock he manufactured out of projection reels for the Ituna Hockey Arena. He enjoyed selling tickets in aid of community projects, especially for Lion's Club, as well as visiting with family and friends.
The Funeral Mass was held on Monday, January 23, 2017 at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church in
Ituna with Rev. Fr. Albert Schmitz as the Celebrant. Serving as cross bearers were Kallie & Alyssa Golemba.
The organist, Paulette van der Helm accompanied the soloist, Gloria Renkas and members of St. Stanislaus choir in the singing of hymns and responses. The readers were Joshua Golemba & Derrick Golemba. A
Eulogy was shared by Colin Golemba & Lacey Flichel. The interment followed in Ituna R. C. Cemetery with
Joshua Golemba, Colin Golemba, Derrick Golemba, Nestor Davyduke, Garry Flichel and Ladmer Moskal serving as casket bearers. Memorials in memory of Ed may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or St. Stanislaus Church as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com
