OYSTRYK - Alice Oystryk, resident of the Yorkton & District Nursing Home, beloved wife of Sam Oystryk of Yorkton, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016. She was 93 years old. Alice was born on the family farm near Shandro, Alberta on July 12, 1923; a daughter of George and Anne Zukiwsky, the second youngest of 7 siblings - 4 sisters and 3 brothers. She attended North Bukowina elementary school and high school at Andrew, Alberta. After graduating high school, she attended Business College in Edmonton, and worked as a stenographer at the Alberta Legislative Building in Edmonton. While working in Edmonton, Alice met Sam who was employed at Burns Canada at the time. They were married in Vancouver, B.C. on August 9, 1947.
They moved to Ocean Falls, BC where Sam was employed by Crown Zellerbach Paper Mill. It was in Ocean Falls that their daughter, Linda, was born in 1948. In 1950, they moved to Saskatchewan and farmed in the Hamton district. In 1953, their other daughter Judy was born. In 1960 they moved to the Rhein district where they continued to farm. In 1975, they moved to Yorkton and actively farmed until 1991. Alice was active in community activities when they lived in Rhein. Lutheran Church Women, Red Cross and curling were part of her activities, and after they moved to Yorkton, she also enjoyed golfing, as well as her church commitments. She was a very good cook and always seemed to be able to produce a wonderful meal even last minute. We all enjoyed her cabbage rolls, home made bread and buns, doughnuts and bierrocks and it didn't matter how many times we tried to make them like hers, they never turned out quite as tasty. Mom was a hard worker helping Dad on the farm, gardening, preserving, doing a multitude of chores, and bringing up the family. Alice and Sam did quite a bit of travelling after moving to Yorkton. They visited different areas in the states and in 1971 they took their first trip to Weslaco, Texas and became "Winter Texans" until 1994. Alice is predeceased by her parents, George and Anne, her sisters Mary, Lena, Helen, and Kate and her brothers Bill, Mike and Nick.
She is survived by her husband Sam, her children- Linda Howard of Leduc, AB and Judy (Bill) Baerr of Rhein; her grandchildren; Jillian (Kevin) Kriger of Yorkton, and Heather (Jeff) Smith of Chilliwack BC, and 2 great grandchildren, Journey and Deacon Kriger. Funeral Services were held on Friday, September 23rd 2016 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Raymond and Margaret Yost of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Yorkton officiating. Pianist, Carla Laycock led the congregation in the singing of the hymns 'What A Friend We Have in Jesus', 'Softly and Tenderly', and 'How Great Thou Art'. Raymond sang a special selection, 'Precious Lord, Take My Hand'. Following the memorial luncheon, the interment took place in the Yorkton City Cemetery.
